Background While housing and neighborhood features have the potential to impact opportunities for active aging, there is a lack of knowledge related to how older people reason regarding their housing situation and how housing and fulfillment of relocation are associated with active and healthy aging. Objective The objectives of Prospective RELOC-AGE are to study housing choices and relocation and explore effects on active and healthy aging among men and women aged 55 years and older in Sweden considering relocation. Methods The estimated sample (2800) will include people aged 55 years and older being listed for relocation at either of two housing companies: a local public housing company i…

Experiences of community-dwelling older adults with the use of telecare in home care services:a qualitative systematic review

2017

BACKGROUND: The aging population will lead to a rise in the number of people with age-related diseases, and increasing demand for home care services. Telecare is seen as a solution to this challenge by promoting aging in place. Nevertheless, there is still a poor understanding of older adults' experiences with the actual use of telecare.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to identify and synthesize the best available qualitative evidence of community-dwelling older adults' experience with the use of telecare in home care services.INCLUSION CRITERIA: This review considered studies that focused on qualitative data, examining older adults' experiences with the use of active and passive techn…

AGING IN PLACE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY: CARE TRANSITIONS AMONG OLDER TWO-GENERATION FAMILIES

2017

Little is known of transitions in care and housing of old two-generation families that include aging (≥40) adults with intellectual disability (ID) and their older (≥65) parents. This study employed the “housing pathways” theory in order to explore the experiences of these families of such transitions. All potential old two-generation families from two local authorities in Taiwan were recruited; 237 families completed our survey and 61 our in-depth interviews between May 2015 and July 2016. Different models and types of transitions in care and housing of these families were identified and found to be connected with changes in their care responsibilities and living arrangements. Old parents …

Not ageing in place: Negotiating meanings of residency in age-related housing

2015

Abstract Purpose This article explores the experience of residing in age-related housing. The focus is on the negotiations around the multiple meanings assigned to place of residency among older people — in a situation where the official policy objectives of growing old in one's own home are not achieved. Design and methods Narrative analysis is employed to study the experiences of older people aged 75 or older living in special types of housing due to actual or anticipated difficulties associated with age. The interviews are part of a larger body of data gathered in MOVAGE Moving in Old Age: Transitions in Housing and Care research project. Findings The storyworld was structured by the rom…

Senior Housing as a Living Environment That Supports Well-Being in Old Age

2020

Background: In different parts of the world new models of senior housing have rapidly appeared, which indicates that existing housing and care models are not fulfilling the hopes and needs of current and new generations of older people. Material and Methods: This qualitative study focuses on one type of communal senior housing complex located in a mid-sized town in Central Finland. The complex was designed to have accessible low-maintenance apartments and common spaces, and to be near easily accessible green spaces, amenities, services, and public transport. The complex has a part-time community coordinator. The minimum age limit is set at 55 years. The data consists of 36 qualitative inter…

The Meaning of a “Sense of Community” in a Finnish Senior Co-Housing Community

2015

In the foreseeable future, alternative housing options will be needed to meet the needs of and answer to the wishes of older people. Co-housing schemes are developed to fulfill the need for a housing type that provides mutual support and social contacts while alleviating the isolation and loneliness often experienced in ordinary neighborhoods. This study on a senior co-housing community in Finland asked what a “sense of community” meant to the residents and how a sense of community becomes visible in daily life. For these residents, a sense of community meant not only living with like-minded people but also communal activities, doing things together, learning from each other, and having rec…

Domestication of a Robotic Medication-Dispensing Service Among Older People in Finnish Lapland

2020

This paper presents a case study on a robotic medication-dispensing service used in the everyday lives of older people in Finnish Lapland through the concept of domestication. The study took an ethnographic approach. A total of 11 service users, practical nurses, and other health-care professionals participated; the service users averaged age 81 years (M= 81.4, SD = 5.4). The data comprised semistructured interviews complemented by observations and photographs at service users’ homes. We concluded that the domestication of the service was successful, although the service users sometimes felt that it limited their lives. The service users stated that learning and subsequently using the servi…

Aging well in the community: Understanding the complexities of older people's dial-a-ride bus journeys

2021

Older peoples' independent living in their own homes and their ability to move around and maintain social relations in their communities have been acknowledged as important aims to support their well-being. In this article, we study Special Transport Services as a means to support older persons with ‘aging in place’ – that is, within their communities. From “go-alongs” (shared dial-a-ride bus journeys) and “sit-down interviews” (at participant's home or a café) with 12 older people living in a Finnish suburb, we explored their everyday dial-a-ride bus trips to the local mall. We used actor-network theory and the concept of motility to show how at first glance what appeared to be simple dial…
